Day 4 Road Tripp

Thanks Alex for posting the pictures and the cool new look. There will be lots more pictures to come.
As you see, today we went to Mt Rushmore. We got an early start and beat the crowds so had great opportunities to stroll around and take lots of pictures. At first it wasn't so impressive, but as we got closer and looked longer we were more and more amazed by the accomplishment of those who did the carving. We had a good time walking around the site and seeing the carvings from differtent angles (as you'll see in the pictures) and talking to the other travelers. We had a good time as well in the gift shop getting books. We were probably there about 2 hours or so; it really doesan't take long to see. From there we drove to Devils Tower. The lady at the welcome center had given Joe some great tips so we drove the back way to DT. No traffic and beautiful scenary. We rounded a corner and there ahead was the tower, clear as day and 20 miles away!
Still not too crowded, we were able to park near the trail. The hike was only 1.3 miles but the temp was up to 90 degrees by then. But it was worth it, so unique from any angle. There were also climbers! again we hit the gift shop and Joe got more books. We gained about 10 pounds of books so far.
Since we left there by 3:00PM CDT, we decided to drive awhile and camp wherever along the way. We settled on Garryowen Montana at a Good Sam camp ground and were again delighted with the site. Great views of the high plains and some nice talkative neighbors from Nebraska. As you can see, we have internet here.
Tomorrow will be another day of just driving unless we decide to visit Little Big Horn which is close by and on the way. We have moved from plains and flat land to high plains and distant mountains. Tomorrow we will really get into mountainous terraine. So much more can be said through pictures- so hang in there until we get to Alexs' and can post pictures.
